Industry shifts after forty: testing a new field before you leap

How to check whether a new industry will hire your experience — before you resign or invest in lengthy training.

Professionals collaborating in a bright workplace

Many mid-career professionals feel drawn to a new field after a long tenure: healthcare administration after manufacturing, renewable energy after logistics, education after corporate finance. The desire is real; the hiring path is often narrower than blog posts suggest.

Start with who already hires people like you

Look for job ads that mention adjacent experience, not only pure specialist credentials. If every posting in the target field demands a licence or degree you lack, note the cost and time before resigning.

Run three informational conversations

Speak with people who made a similar move in Germany — ideally at your age band. Ask what their first year salary looked like and which parts of their old experience actually transferred. One optimistic acquaintance is not a sample.

Keep a bridge role in view

A full leap is not the only structure. Project work, internal transfers, or a step into a supplier or customer industry can preserve income while you learn. Clients who insist on a clean break sometimes discover six months later that a bridge would have been kinder to their household.
